IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions

Give Directly From Your IRA

A tax-smart way to support your neighbors in northern Georgetown and Williamson County — right now.

If you're 70½ or older, a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) lets you give directly from your IRA to The Caring Place—turning your retirement savings into immediate, real help for families in crisis. It's one of the most tax-efficient ways to give, and unlike many planned gifts, it puts your generosity to work today.

What Is a Qualified Charitable Distribution?

A Qualified Charitable Distribution—sometimes called an IRA charitable rollover—is a gift made directly from your IRA to a qualified charity like The Caring Place. If you're 70½ or older, you can transfer funds straight from your IRA to us without the distribution counting as taxable income. And if you're 73 or older and required to take a minimum distribution, a QCD can satisfy some or all of that requirement while supporting your community.

Why Give Through a QCD?

Lower your taxable income. A QCD goes directly to The Caring Place without ever being counted as taxable income to you—a benefit you receive whether or not you itemize your deductions.

Satisfy your required minimum distribution. If you're required to take minimum distributions, a QCD can count toward that requirement, letting you meet an obligation while doing good.

Give more efficiently. Because the gift avoids income tax, a QCD often lets you give more effectively than writing a check from other funds.

Make an immediate impact. Unlike a gift through your estate, a QCD helps families right now—putting food on the table, a roof overhead, and dignity in a moment of crisis this year.

Keep your gift local. Every gift stays right here, meeting the essential needs of families throughout Georgetown and northern Williamson County with compassion and respect.

A Few Things to Know

QCDs come with some specific IRS rules, and your advisor can help you navigate them:

  • You must be at least 70½ years old at the time of the gift.
  • The gift must be transferred directly from your IRA to The Caring Place—funds that pass through you first won't qualify.
  • QCDs apply to IRAs; other retirement plans, such as 401(k)s, may need to be rolled into an IRA first.
  • There is an annual limit on how much you can give through QCDs, which the IRS adjusts over time.

How to Get Started

Making a QCD is simple. Contact your IRA administrator and request a qualified charitable distribution directly to The Caring Place. You'll need our organization information:

Organization: The Caring Place EIN: 74-2386902

Because a QCD is sent directly from your IRA, please let us know to expect your gift—it helps us watch for it, acknowledge it promptly, and make sure you receive proper documentation for your records.
